But First...Get Packing With Style

I love Longchamp, a French brand of bags made (mostly) with recycled nylon. I think I may own at least 6 in different colors and sizes.  These bags are super practical and are easy to clean and they fold into compact sizes.  Use it as a carry-on and feel like a Parisienne when you land! This expandable travel bag, Le Pilage, converts to two sizes and is very much on my must-get list!

I use mine as a carry-on/computer bag, and then often as an overnight or beach bag, and oftentimes a shopping bag in a pinch!

Reason 1: What is Uzès Best Known For? A Medieval Town Built on Roman Ruins

Uzès isn’t your typical tourist trap. It’s a town where history whispers from the golden limestone buildings and cobblestone streets.

Above all, its story begins with the Romans, who called it Ucetia. Traces of their presence linger, waiting to be discovered by curious explorers like yourself. But, Uzès truly blossomed during the Middle Ages, transforming into a prosperous silk-producing town.  Encircled by an outer ring road that once served as a protective wall, the town boasts a well-preserved historic center.  The well-preserved medieval center, a testament to this era, allows you to experience the magic firsthand.

Designated as a Ville d’Art et d’Histoire (City of Art and History) and a Grand Sites Occitanie, Uzès France is a treasure trove for antiquarians. Nestled in southern France’s Gard department, Uzès boasts a warm Provençal spirit and enjoys easy access to the bustling cities of Nîmes, Avignon, and Alès.

Hence, this is just the first reason to fall in love with this hidden gem of France.

Insider tip: As recently as 2017, a large Roman complex was uncovered in Uzès during some construction. It’s been dated to the second half of the first century BCE with these incredibly detailed mosaics still intact as you can see in the above photo. However, as the area is still being excavated by INRAP, it is not yet open to the public.

Reason 2: It’s got a Medieval Castle and a Duke! - Duchè d’Uzès

Step back in time while strolling Uzès’ lovely streets. This southern French jewel boasts the magnificent Duché d’Uzès, a medieval castle symbolizing its rich past.

Built atop a Roman castrum (fort) in the 1st century, the castle has witnessed centuries of power struggles and courtly life. Sometimes referred to as the Duchy, it was elevated to a Dukedom in 1565.  Boasting the title of France’s first and oldest ducal peerage, the Duché has been the Crussol family’s prestigious residence since the 1600s

This prestigious title signifies the Duke of Uzès’s historical importance, holding precedence over all other noble houses in France.  The Crussol family remains the castle’s custodian to this day and they take an active part in the town’s cultural life.

Accordingly, true to its origin as a defensive fort, the castle is integrated into the fabric of the community.  Sign up for our newsletter to be alerted when we post our in-depth article on the castle, its inhabitants, and the tour!
